General Questions
  • Is the material in AHRO authoritative?
The titles and entries in AHRO's books are written by thousands of scholars around the world who are specialists in the topics they are writing about. Over the years, it is estimated that 20% of the world's historians have contributed their expertise. It is highly likely that a professor at your institution has participated in the preparation of one or more of the titles in AHRO. All contributions are reviewed by experienced editors before publication. The AHRO titles, therefore, are authoritative, peer reviewed, and undergo rigorous editing. back to top
  • Are there limitations to access?

Reading an eBook
  • Should I view my eBooks by the entry or by the page?
You have the option of viewing the eBook content either by entry or by page. Titles in page format more closely follow the page layout found in the print. Electronic page breaks are inserted at the same spot in the text where a phyical page break would occur; all pages of the book are faithfully reproduced. Tites in entry format display eBook content without regard for the physical limitations imposed by the printed page. Titles in entry format display all text relating to a specific topic together as a single entry. Due to issues with page to entry content conversion, the in-book index and table of contents entries had to be removed from each title. The default setting is by entry. The individual user is able to modify the content format in the session profile. The view you decide to use is likely to be a matter of preference or could be dictated by your instructor.
Page View:  "Next" and "Previous" buttons allow the reader to navigate from page to consecutive page. Printing is limited to fifty (50) sequential pages. Citations at the bottom of each page will point directly to that page number. Accessing the title via the citation URL provided will lead to the specific page number referenced.
Entry View:  "Next" and "Previous" buttons allow the reader to navigate from entry to consecutive entry regardless of how long the entry is. Printing is limited to fifty (50) sequential entries. Citations at the bottom of each entry will point directly to the beginning of whatever entry you are currently viewing. Accessing the title via the citation URL will lead to the beginning of the entry number referenced.
Note: Changes to the content format setting will revert back to the default of "entry" after logging out or when your session expires.
Note: ABC-CLIO recommends closing all open eBook windows before changing the content format value - otherwise, unexpected behavior may result.

  • May I open more than one title at a time?
All navigation within the site should remain within a single browser window (except when loading links to external online resources outside of the ABC-CLIO domain). To open a title in a new browser window or browser tab, right click on any link and select "Open in New Tab" or "Open in New Window". back to top
  • How do I navigate through an eBook?
eBooks may be accessed directly through your institution's electronic card catalog, by browsing the AHRO collection, or through the results from a search. Key points on how to proceed once you have the title opened are detailed below.

The area denoted by the label "Title and Page/Entry # Indicator" holds the following information: the title of the book, the current page or entry number, the location path, and if you drag your cursor over the title - the author and publication date will appear.
Click "Next" or "Previous" to browse between entries (or pages). The arrow buttons at the bottom of the page will provide the same functionality.
Go directly to an entry by typing in the entry number in the "Go To Entry #" field and pressing the enter key on your keyboard (or clicking the link labeled "Go To Entry #").
You can easily navigate through the table of contents using the left panel of the left side of the screen. Clicking on a "+" will expand each section, the "-" will collapse it. Clicking directly on the text will open and display the first page of the first entry for that section.

  • Can I hide or expand the right or left-hand panels?
No, these panels cannot be resized. The left panel holds the table of contents and the right panel contians the print button. back to top
  • How can I adjust the text size to be bigger or smaller?
Adjusting text size is a browser dependent feature. In Microsoft Internet Explorer: > View > Text Size > Larger. In Mozilla FireFox: Click the "Ctrl" button along with the "+" or "-" keys to increase or decrease text size. Click "Ctrl" and zero (0) to return text to normal size. back to top
  • What happened to my notes from version 1?
Version 1 of the eBooks platform included the ability to record and save small snippets of text called "Notes". This functionality was not transferred into the new AHRO interface for the version 2 release. "Notes" may reappear in subsequent versions of the site as the product develops over time. Once the version 1 sites have been retired, it will not be possible to retrieve your saved data. back to top

Citations
  • How should I cite the information I find on this web site?
ABC-CLIO provides ready-made citations for use when quoting or paraphrasing material.
Citation information can be found at the bottom of all pages and entries.
Use the drop-down menu to select the citation format of your choice.
ABC-CLIO's automatic citation feature will automatically add appropriate information when printing the page or entry.
Alternately, you can highlight the citation, cut, and then paste the text into your document.
Note: While the content of each citation is technically correct, the spacing and formatting of that citation may be distorted from the true standard when copying into another document. Please be sure to duplicate any indentations, italics or underlined words when copying the required citation.
Note: Regarding the MLA citation style - According to the MLA style guide (http://www.mla.org/style_faq4): "For a work from a subscription service, the name of the service and—if a library or a consortium of libraries is the subscriber— [include] the name and geographic location (e.g., city, state abbreviation) of the subscriber". Our electronic resources are only available to our paying subscribers, and at this time we are unable to provide their name and geographic location automatically, for this reason we feel it is better to cite the full path as though our databases were open to the public.

Linking
  • How do I use linking to go directly to an entry, page, or book?
    AHRO supports stable, deep linking.
When a URL related to a book, page, or entry is placed in a document which supports direct linking (such as Word, Excel, or a MARC record) by clicking on the link, you can go directly to that book, entry, or page.
The typical way that a link is placed in a document is by copying and pasting the citation or link directly into a document.
When printing, the automatic citation feature will contain the link information.

  • Why is the SHAFR Guide now available on ABC-CLIO: History Reference Online?
The AHRO hosting of The Guide to American Foreign Relations: 3rd Edition (The SHAFR Guide) is part of a comprehensive consolidation plan for ABC-CLIO; to bring all eBook products under a single user interface and hosting infrastructure. This allows us to reduce development and maintenance costs while significantly improving the features available to SHAFR Guide subscribers. back to top
  • How is the SHAFR Guide different from other ABC-CLIO eBook titles?
The SHAFR Guide is a definitive historiographic resource on U.S. foreign relations throughout history. Sold under a subscription liscense, the guide is conveniently updated twice a year. back to top
  • How often are new entries added to the guide?
The Guide to American Foreign Relations: 3rd Edition is updated twice a year, every April and October. Insertion dates have been added to each entry for easy reference. back to top
  • Is there a way to find only the entries added to the guide on a specific date?
Advanced users may wish to search only over entries that have been recently added to the guide. We recommend adding the publication cycle date to your searches to make this functionality possible. For example: the query ["April 2008" and "Benjamin Franklin"] should return all pages containing the phrase "Benjamin Franklin" and entries added to the guide in April of 2008. back to top
Compatibility
  • What computers or operating systems are supported?
As with most web applications and databases, all of ABC-CLIO's academic offerings are platform independent. Any operating system that makes use of one of the approved web browsers should be compatible with History Reference Online. back to top
  • What web browsers are supported?
Please see the Tech Notes section for a list of compatible browsers. back to top
  • What is the optimum screen resolution for viewing the site?
    ABC-CLIO recommends a screen resolution somewhere between 1024 x 768 pixels and 1280 x 1024 pixels.
Settings below 800 x 600 will cause the website to display incorrectly. back to top
  • Why do I see a box for some special characters (typically non-English language)?
Some titles contain foreign language, punctuation, and other special characters not contained within the ASCII or LATIN-1 character sets. All content should be encoded using the ASCII character set and using HTML character entity references to represent the higher order characters. In cases this is not possible, an encoding of Latin-1 is used.
If you notice an incorrectly encoded character anywhere on this site please contact Technical Support to report this error. back to top
